Improving Vocational School Teachers Knowledge and Skills through Training on Making Innovative Media and Scientific Work

The Community Service Team (P2M) of the Mechanical Engineering Education Study Program, Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (PTM FPTK UPI) gave training to vocational school teachers in Riau on the creation of Innovative Media and Scientific Work for vocational school teachers.

The P2M activities conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Gunung Sahilan which is located at Jl. Raya Pekanbaru - Taluk Kuantan, Kebun Durian, Kec. Mount Sahilan, Kab. Kampar Riau. It was attended by representatives of 12 vocational school teachers who are teaching motorcycle engineering, automotive, adaptive, English and the Bahasa Indonesia. Activities carried out offline by implementing health protocols, starting from measuring body temperature, washing hands, and distributing masks. The number of participants is limited to 40% of the space capacity provided and some participants took part virtually (15-17 September 2020).

The team consisting of the chairman, namely Dr. Dedi Rohendi, M.T and the members are Dr. H. Kamin Sumardi, M.Pd. assisted by the students and alumni involved, namely Nissa Aulia Saputra, S.Pd. and Nissaudzakiah Utami. The program was supported by the UPI School of Postgraduate P2M Grant as a form of implementation of the Tridarma of Higher Education and UPI's partnership with schools and teachers.

In his speech, the Team Leader, Dr. Dedi Rohendi, M.T stated that this P2M activity is one of the activities to improve the ability of teachers to prepare learning tools, especially online learning tools and help teachers prepare themselves to smoothen the requirements for promotion to a higher class by requiring teachers to have scientific writing.

"This training activity is expected to increase the knowledge and skills of vocational school teachers in Riau. With this activity, it is hoped that in the future it can be continued and conducted regularly so the ability of vocational school teachers will increase, "said Dr. Dedi Rohendi.

The training given to participants was material on innovative media, making innovative media through multimedia, e-learning by Dr. Dedi Rohendi, MT., academic writing by Dr. H. Kamin Sumardi, M.Pd., and the practice of making media using Macromedia flash was delivered by students and alumni.

"To facilitate the delivery of the material, the P2M Team made a video template for this animated multimedia making tutorial and it has been distributed through WhatsApp," concluded the Team Leader, Dr. Dedi Rohendi, M.T.

In his remarks, the Head of SMK Negeri 1 Gunung Sahilan, Masnur K, S.Pd., M.Pd., welcomed the intentions of the P2M team. In the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, many teachers have difficulties preparing innovative media since teachers are required to have digital media or learning media to help students. Besides having problems with the limited ability of teachers to make scientific works, many teachers are hampered from fulfilling the requirements for promotion. The school hopes that this P2M activity can improve the skills of the teachers of SMK Negeri 1 Gunung Sahilan and the activities can be conducted programmatically and continuously.
